Makerere University Student Reports Colleague To Police For Vybing Him On Whatsapp

Police are currently investigating a case involving a male student from Makerere University School of Law who is accused of sending love messages to another male student from the same university. According to Mr. Karungi, he visited a friend in one of the hostels near Makerere University, where he encountered the suspect. They exchanged phone contacts, but Mr. Karungi was unaware of the suspect's romantic interest in him. The suspect then began sending him love messages on WhatsApp, despite Mr. Karungi's disinterest due to his sexual orientation. The continuous messages annoyed Mr. Karungi, prompting him to report the matter to the police.

To support his case, Mr. Karungi submitted all the WhatsApp messages that the suspect had sent to him. The police plan to use these messages as evidence in their ongoing investigation. They also intend to summon the suspect and analyze his phone with the help of ICT experts.

In an interview, Mr. Karungi explained that he opened the case due to the suspect's persistent sexual harassment. The suspect sent him inappropriate messages, including pictures of gay people, and even offered him money. Despite Mr. Karungi's clear refusal and request for the messages to stop, the suspect continued to send them, leading Mr. Karungi to take the matter seriously and report it to the authorities.

When contacted, the suspect denied knowing Mr. Karungi and claimed that the accusations were part of a smear campaign orchestrated by anti-gay campaigners and the government, targeting him as a human rights defender.

The university has not remained silent on the issue. Dr. Euzobia Mugisha Baine, the head of the Gender Mainstreaming Directorate at Makerere University, may provide insights or comments on the matter.
